Early Morning Wrong-Way Crash on Highway 85 in Sunnyvale Kills Both Drivers
SUNNYVALE, CA (September 13, 2019) – Two people died in a wrong-way crash early Friday morning in Sunnyvale.
The crash happened just after 1:00 a.m. on northbound Highway 85 at Fremont Avenue, above Central Expressway.
According to the CHP, a Ford SUV was traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of Highway 85 when it crashed head-on into an oncoming Honda Civic, driven by a 35-year-old American Canyon man.
The impact caused the Ford to overturn and burst into flames. The Honda was badly damaged.
As a result, both drivers died at the scene. Their identities were not immediately available pending notification of their family members.
There were no passengers in either vehicle, the CHP said.
Officials blocked the highway in both directions for about five hours while they worked on the scene. All southbound lanes were reopened before the start of the morning commute, while all northbound lanes reopened around 6:00 a.m.
It is unknown if drugs or alcohol was a factor in the crash, which remains under investigation.
Authorities encouraged anyone who witnessed the crash to call Officer Ricky Patlan Jr. at (650) 369-6261.
