Elias Navarro and Rene Rocha Hurt in Fatal 3-Car Crash on Orange Belt Drive
PORTERVILLE, CA (August 16, 2019) – Two people were killed following a three-vehicle crash Friday night in Porterville.
Around 6:17 p.m., a 63-year-old Porterville man was driving his 2000 Saturn sedan south on Orange Belt Drive, just north of Avenue 184 at an unknown speed.
A 2012 Dodge pickup truck, driven by a 61-year-old Elias Navarro, was traveling behind the Saturn at about 55 mph.
Meanwhile, Rene Rocha, 30 of Terra Bella, was driving his 2014 Honda Civic northbound on Orange Belt Drive, south of the intersection with Avenue 184 at 60 mph.
According to the CHP, the Saturn suddenly stopped directly in front of the Dodge, possibly to make a left turn onto eastbound Avenue 184. The front end of the Dodge slammed into the back of the Saturn.
The impact caused the Saturn to rotate on its wheels and collided head-on with the Honda, officers said. The Dodge stopped just south of the intersection.
As a result, the driver of the Saturn and his male passenger both died at the scene.
Paramedics transported Navarro to Sierra View Medical Center in Porterville with a cut to his forehead. Rocha sustained a minor abrasion to his right arm.
The CHP is investigating.
