Fiery Big Rig Crash on Interstate 8 Killed Two
East County, CA (May 14, 2021) – On Wednesday, two people were killed in Interstate 8 big rig crash.
The fatal accident took place at about 7:50 p.m. near Pine Valley between Sunrise Highway and Buckman Springs Road.
“The vehicle traveled across the center divider hit a bridge rail on the westbound side of Interstate 8, and then traveled down (a) dirt embankment,” a police officer said. “The vehicle immediately became engulfed in flames.”
Subsequently, the semi-truck fire sparked a small vegetation blaze in the area. Luckily, firefighters were able to quickly put out the fire.
On Thursday, officers located a dead person inside the truck. At around 1 p.m., they located the second dead person inside the wreckage.
“Due to the severity of the crash and the type of vehicle involved, it took a lengthy amount of time and resources to locate the victim,” an officer said.
Moreover, due to the bridge’s damage on the westbound side of the freeway, all westbound lanes between Buckman Springs Road and Sunrise Highway were closed for approximately three hours.
Consequently, officers diverted the traffic onto Old Highway 80 as the crew clear the accident scene.
CHP investigators didn’t immediately know if alcohol or drugs were a factor in the fatal accident.
