Two Fatally Injured in Fiery Accident on Highway 78
SANTA YSABEL, CA (May 20, 2019) – Two car passengers suffered fatal injuries following a fiery crash in Santa Ysabel on Saturday, May 18.
At around 1:20 a.m., California Highway Patrol dispatchers received reports of the incident. The report stated that a car and nearby trees were on fire along Highway 78 just east of its intersection with Highway 79.
According to CHP Officer Travis Garrow, a 2019 Toyota Corolla traveled west on Highway 78 then veered onto the opposite side of the highway. After that, it ran off the road and struck a tree, Garrow stated. The vehicle caught fire and both passengers, a male and female, succumbed to sustained injuries.
The driver, a 29-year-old Temecula woman, suffered major injuries. Paramedics brought her to a hospital.
Garrow said the identities of the passengers are not yet released. Investigators are trying to find out the cause of the incident. However, Garrow stated that the driver is suspected of drunken driving. No other vehicles are believed to have been part of the crash.
Officials shut down lanes after the collision but had reopened at around 7 a.m., according to a CHP incident log. Some fencing also had some damage in the collision, which Caltrans crews repaired.
