Julio Gamboa and Humberto Tovar Involved in Fatal DUI Collision near Henry Miller Avenue

LOS BANOS, CA (June 20, 2018) – On Wednesday evening, two Bakersfield residents were killed and a man was hospitalized, following a wrong-way crash on Interstate 5.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the deadly collision involving three vehicles happened at around 11:30 PM. A 2008 Nissan, driven by 34-year-old Humberto Tovar of Patterson, was heading north in the southbound lanes, just north of Henry Miller Avenue.

The wrong-way driver then collided head-on with a southbound 2018 Toyota. The impact of the collision sent the Toyota in the No 2 lane, where it was struck by an oncoming 2016 Freightliner truck, driven by 44-year-old Julio Gamboa of Wilmington.

The 26-year-old male driver of the Toyota and his 36-year-old female passenger, both residents of Bakersfield, sustained fatal injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene by emergency responders. CHP reported that the Toyota occupants were not secured in a seat belt at the time of the accident. Their identities were withheld, pending notification of family.

Gamboa was reportedly unharmed, while Tovar was transported to the Doctors Medical Center in Modesto after suffering major injuries. Authorities believe that alcohol was a factor in the deadly collision, and Tovar will be facing DUI charges once he recovers.

No other information has been released to the public at this time, as officials continue their investigation.

Our thoughts are with the bereaved loved ones of the deceased victims. We wish them strength and comfort during this trying time. May they rest in peace.
