Elderly Bicyclist Struck and Killed by Car near Lander Avenue
TURLOCK, CA (May 2, 2018) – On Wednesday evening around 8:30 PM, an elderly man was killed in a bike accident on East Harding Road.
Officers from the California Highway Patrol Modesto Office responded to the scene of the crash, just east of Lander Avenue, after the Merced Communication Center (MCC) received calls of a bicyclist being struck by a car.
According to reports, a 71-year-old man was riding a bicycle traveling eastbound on E Harding. At the same time, Mr. Pernsteirner was driving a 2005 Mercedes Benz in the same direction at 40-45 mph, approaching the elderly bicyclist from behind.
Due to dark conditions and the biker wearing dark clothing, the driver did not see him, rear-ending his bicycle. The elderly man was thrown onto the windshield of the car and suffered major injuries. He was taken to the Doctors Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead.
Police stated that the rider was not wearing a helmet or any reflective gear at the time of the collision. They continue to investigate the fatal incident, and do not believe that drugs or alcohol are contributing factors. The man’s identity has not yet been released, pending notification of family.
Sincere sympathies to the family and friends of the bicyclist killed in this tragic collision. May he rest in peace.
