Wrong-Way Head-On Collision on Highway 1 near Clarendon Road Kills 2 and Injures 3
PACIFICA, CA (February 11, 2019) – Two people were killed following a wrong-way crash early Monday morning in Pacifica, authorities said.
The fatal crash happened around 4:15 a.m. on Highway 1 near Clarendon Road.
According to the California Highway Patrol, a Toyota Prius was heading southbound in the northbound lanes of the highway when it collided head-on with a Chevrolet Silverado.
A backseat passenger in the Prius, identified as a 23-year-old Tulio de Giovanni Lima Viana of Daly City, was ejected from the car and pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators believe Viana was not wearing a seat belt when the crash occurred.
A second passenger in the Prius, a 23-year-old Megan Alyssa Cota of San Francisco, was also killed in the crash.
The man driving the Prius, believed to be Viana’s brother, was taken to San Francisco General Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition.
Two men in the Silverado were hospitalized with injuries not considered life-threatening.
It is unknown if drugs and/or alcohol were contributing factors in the crash. The CHP is investigating the crash, including how the Prius got onto the highway headed the wrong way.
During this mournful time, we would like to send our well-wishes and sincere sympathies to the grieving families and friends of Tulio Viana and Megan Cota.
