Trooper Justin Schaffer Dies after Hit by Car on I-5 in Chehalis in a High-speed Chase

 
Chehalis, WA, (March 25, 2020)Justin Schaffer, a 28-year-old Washington state trooper, was killed after being struck in a high-speed chase on I-5 in Chehalis.
 
According to the Washington State Patrol, Schaffer left his patrol car to arrange spike strips to attempt to deflate the suspect’s tires, when he was hit by the suspect’s speeding vehicle.
 
Paramedics immediately transported Schaffer to Providence Medical Center to have him airlifted to Seattle. However, he succumbed to his injuries before the airlift.
 
Trooper Justin Schaffer served for 7 years with WSP and was the son of a long time Chief Police of Chehalis, Glenn Schaffer.

Following the Suspect’s Story

 
The investigation revealed that a 39-year-old William Thompson, a burglary suspect, prompted the police chase into Lewis County on I-5, the chase first starting out in Thurston County.
 
Furthermore, the suspect continued speeding on I-5 for three more miles before crashing into a light pole. In coordination with SWAT officers, officials fired tear gas into the pickup truck, but Thompson refused to surrender.
 
Later, Lewis Co. Sheriff Rob Snaza stated that the suspect made a phone call before finally surrendering peacefully.
