According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the deadly incident happened around 6:09 a.m. on Highway 99 near Mettler.

Reports say that a pedestrian lost their life after being struck by a vehicle on Highway 99 near Mettler early Friday morning.

Authorities say that a 2021 GMC Yukon SUV was traveling southbound at about 75 mph when it encountered a pedestrian walking in the traffic lanes, north of Highway 166.

The driver was unable to avoid the pedestrian, resulting in a fatal collision. The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene. The Kern County coroner will release their identity at a later time.
