1 Person Dead in San Clemente Pedestrian Accident on 5 Freeway near Avenue Palizado

SAN CLEMENTE, CA (July 23, 2024) – Monday morning, a tragic pedestrian crash on 5 Freeway near Avenue Palizado killed one person.

The incident happened at around 9:35 a.m. on the San Diego 5 Freeway, just north of Avenue Palizado.

According to California Highway Patrol Officer B Kinsey, a freeway service patrol tow truck veered off the roadway onto the shoulder struck a Caltrans vehicle, and ran over a Caltrans worker who was picking up debris in the roadway. Then, the force of the crash pushed the Caltrans vehicle over a curb and collided with a Nissan Rogue.

Responding paramedics pronounced the Caltrans worker dead at the scene. Then, paramedics transported the driver of the tow truck with minor injuries, the driver of the Nissan, and another Caltrans worker, both with minor injuries, to a hospital for treatment.

At this time, the circumstances that led to the crash remained unclear. Once additional details become available, the public will be notified.

Due to the limited information available, the authorities continued to investigate the crash.
