2 People Dead and 3 Injured in Crash on Keyes Road in Ceres
Ceres, CA (January 19, 2024) – On Thursday evening, Ceres police were in pursuit of a vehicle where both the driver and passenger were killed after being ejected from their car in a crash on Keyes Road.
Officers from the Modesto Police Department initiated contact with four men in a grey Ford Fusion parked near Hatch Road and Jim Way shortly before 9 p.m. The vehicle then fled east on Hatch Road, proceeding onto Highway 99. The Ceres Police Department started tailing the vehicle, escalating to a pursuit when the driver began overtaking other vehicles on the shoulder.
Dirk Nieuwenhuis, the public information officer for the Ceres Police Department, explained, “The driver chose to endanger the public with reckless driving maneuvers even before we attempted a traffic stop. That behavior likely influenced the decision to initiate a pursuit.” He added that the department meticulously reviews every pursuit to ensure adherence to protocols and to learn from each incident for future improvement.
The California Highway Patrol later reported that a 20-year-old man from Modesto, driving the pursued 2016 Ford Fusion, was heading east on Keyes Road towards Geer Road. Concurrently, a 17-year-old from Hughson was driving a 2016 Ford Mustang and was nearing the Keyes Road intersection. The Ford Fusion collided with the right side of the Mustang at the intersection, critically injuring the teenager and necessitating hospitalization.
The collision resulted in the driver and the front-seat passenger of the Fusion being ejected and pronounced dead at the scene. Two other passengers in the Fusion sustained injuries and were hospitalized.
Family members identified Fernando Barajas as one of the deceased, occupying the front seat of the Fusion. Grieving the loss, Barajas’ mother, Tanya Reyes, criticized the police chase, while a vigil held on Friday night saw family and friends mourning the two men. Barajas’ wife, Angelina Herrara, lamented the profound loss, highlighting the impact on their daughter.
Reyes recounted the chilling last moments on the phone with her son during the onset of the police chase. Ceres Police clarified that their protocol involves continuing a pursuit until air support arrives, allowing ground units to withdraw. Air units reached the crash scene at Geer and Keyes Roads a minute after the incident.
