Merkel, TX (December 14, 2024) On Thursday evening, a person was pronounced dead after a frightening 2-vehicle crash on Interstate 20.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), the deadly incident happened at 6:00 p.m. on the access road of I-20, east of town.

Reports say that the fiery crash claimed the life of one person after a minivan collided with a truck driven by a subcontractor for TxDOT.

Emergency crews found the minivan fully engulfed in flames upon arrival, while the truck had overturned on its side. Authorities confirmed that one individual in the minivan died at the scene. Officials are withholding the victim’s identity until next of kin are notified.

First responders, including the Texas Department of Public Safety, have secured the area, and the fire has been extinguished. Westbound traffic on I-20 near mile marker 271 (Iron Horse) is currently closed as investigations continue. Drivers are urged to avoid the area.
