Pickup Truck Driver Dies after He Rear-Ends Big Rig on Altamont Pass
TRACY, CA (January 24, 2019) – A man was killed following a rear-end crash Thursday morning on the Altamont Pass, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The fatal crash happened around 5:29 a.m. at the intersection of 580 Freeway and 205 Freeway.
CHP officials said a pickup truck slammed into the back of a big rig, killing the pickup truck driver. The identity of the man has not yet been released pending notification of his family members.
The driver of the big rig was unharmed.
Two left lanes on southbound 205 Freeway were blocked until around 8:30 a.m. due to fuel that had spilled on the roadway. Motorists were advised to use 580 Freeway to the Patterson Pass/Mountain House Parkway exit as a detour.
Alcohol did not appear to be a factor in the wreck, CHP officials said. An initial investigation showed that the pickup truck hit the rear of the semi at a fast speed.
