Deadly Big Rig Hit-and-Run Crash on 5 Freeway in Castaic
CASTAIC, CA (May 31, 2019) – A tow truck driver was fatally struck by a big rig that fled the scene Friday evening, in Castaic.
The crash happened around 8:13 p.m., along the southbound lanes of 5 Freeway. Dispatchers arrived just North of Templin Highway shortly after.
According to reports, the tow-truck driver was in the process of towing a broken down vehicle before his truck was struck by the big rig.
The paramedics were immediately called for needed medical assistance. Arriving medics pronounced the victim dead on scene due to the impact.
Furthermore, the big rig driver also fled the scene before officers arrived.
The big rig was described by witnesses as red and black, hauling a double trailer filled with some sort of rocks, possibly fitted with Arizona license plates.
Moreover, two lanes of the freeway were shut down for a brief time during the investigation. A traffic alert was eventually issued in the area. However, the surrounding roadway has since reopened.
No identifying information has been released at this time. Witnesses are urged to reach the CHP’s Newhall-area office at 661-294-5540.
