Van Nuys Man Identified as Passenger Killed in Rollover Crash on 5 Freeway
SANTA CLARITA, CA (October 5, 2019) – Authorities identified 22-year-old Tommy Cruz of Van Nuys as the passenger killed in a rollover crash near 14 Freeway, early Saturday morning.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the incident happened at about 12:50 AM. A Toyota Camry was going in excess of 100 mph, passing vehicles in the center divider.
Then, the vehicle left the main lanes of 5 Freeway and went down the dirt embankment. There, the Toyota overturned multiple times and came to rest on its wheels.
Cruz, who was a passenger in the front seat, died at the scene. Meanwhile, emergency responders rushed the unidentified driver to Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital for moderate injuries. Authorities later arrested the driver on suspicion of DUI.
Investigators encourage witnesses to cooperate and call CHP’s Newhall-area station at (661) 294-5540. Authorities will release additional information once it becomes available.
