51-Year-Old Man Fatally Injured in Collision on Floyd Avenue near Bahia Way

MODESTO, CA (March 14, 2018) – A 51-year-old man was killed in a fatal hit-and-run collision on Floyd Avenue on Wednesday evening.

The crash occurred at around 11:00 PM on Floyd Avenue near Bahia Way in a residential area just east of Coffee Road. According to police, 51-year-old Timothy Lewis was driving a 2000 Mitsubishi Mirage and made a U-turn to park along Floyd Avenue, when he was broadsided by a 2004 Honda Civic, driven by 22-year-old Ivan Andrew Garcia.

Garcia fled from the scene, but residents followed him with their vehicles and on foot, keeping dispatchers informed of Garcia’s location. He did not get far and was arrested by police officials. Information was not immediately available on Thursday morning if anyone physically tried to stop Garcia.

Authorities found Lewis unresponsive in his car. Emergency responders attempted to save his life as he was rushed to a local hospital via ambulance, but he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. Neither of the vehicles had other occupants and no one else was hurt in the incident.

Authorities revealed that speed and driving under the influence were contributing factors in the fatal crash.

Garcia, who was on probation, is currently being held without bail and faces charges of murder, felony DUI causing injury or death and felony hit-and-run causing injury or death. Garcia’s probation was from an August 2016 conviction, Stanislaus County Superior Court archives show. He pleaded no contest to misdemeanor driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol and misdemeanor hit-and-run with property damage.

A GoFundMe page was set-up to assist Lewis’ family with funeral expenses.
