81-Year-Old Man Dies after Tow Truck Broadsides SUV in Carmel Valley
CARMEL VALLEY, CA (October 6, 2019) – Authorities identified 81-year-old Thomas Royden as the man killed in a broadside crash on El Camino Real, Sunday evening.
According to the San Diego Police Department, the incident happened near Carmel Valley Road, at about 9:40 PM. Due to unknown reasons, a southbound tow truck ran a red light at the intersection. There, it slammed into the right side of a westbound Honda CRV.
Royden, a passenger in the Honda, suffered serious injuries and was transported to a hospital. Unfortunately, he succumbed to injuries and died two hours after the incident. Meanwhile, the 72-year-old woman driving the Honda had a minor complaint of pain.
The 49-year-old man driving the tow truck remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. Authorities ruled out intoxication as a factor in the fatal collision.
Officers will release additional information once it becomes available.
