Thelma Barrios Dies after Car Accident on Sacramento Freeway Early on Sunday
Sacramento, CA (June 8, 2020) – Officials have identified Thelma Soto Barrios as the woman killed in the fiery crash on Highway 99 near 12th avenue on May 31.
At 2:25 a.m. early Sunday morning, dispatchers sent authorities to Highway 99 after reports of a serious collision that caused one vehicle to catch on fire.
According to CHP, Barrios, of Rancho Cordova, was a passenger in a Kia northbound on the highway.
The incident occurred when Edgar Mayorga, a Sacramento resident, drove a Toyota Tundra at a high rate of speed down the freeway.
The Tundra then struck the Kia from behind while moving from the No. 3 lane to the No. 2 lane.
As a result, the Kia became engulfed in fire.
The driver of the Kia escaped the vehicle in time, however Thelma Barrios remained trapped.
Subsequently, officials pronounced Thelma Soto Barrios, 30, dead after putting out the flames.
Moreover, the medical response team transported the Kia driver to UC Davis Medical Center with severe burns.
The Tundra driver, Mayorga, did not sustain injuries, and police arrested him for suspicion of driving intoxicated.
He is currently facing charges of DUI and gross vehicular manslaughter.
