Girl Dies after Texting Driver Omer Gorsi Causes Sutter County Car Accident
SUTTER COUNTY, CA (July 2, 2019) — A girl died and several others suffered injuries in a multi-vehicle crash on Highway 99 Sunday afternoon.
The California Highway Patrol said the crash occurred at around 4:25 p.m. 24-year-old Omer Darz Gorsi of Live Oak allegedly caused the incident. Gorsi was on his phone when the crash happened as per a CHP report.
An investigation indicated that Gorsi was driving a Ford F-250 southbound on Highway 99, south of Clark Road. He was going at around 55 mph and texting on his phone, so he did not see the Acura Integra ahead of him and rear-ended it.
The force of the crash ejected a young girl who was sitting in the passenger seat of the Acura. She died from her injuries.
The impact also pushed the Acura into northbound lanes. The vehicle was going around 15 mph due to slower traffic, CHP said. The driver and a third passenger in the Acura suffered major injuries. After that, emergency responders transported the driver to Enloe Medical Center, while the other passenger to UC Davis Medical Center.
Investigators believe that Gorsi’s Ford continued southbound after that initial crash. It subsequently collided with another vehicle which was going 15 mph and was the next car ahead of the Acura. That caused Gorsi’s truck to overturn. As a result, it ejected him onto the east shoulder of the highway. The Ford came to rest on its roof and blocked the northbound lane.
In addition, the wrecked Ford and Acura were blocking the roadway. As a result, two other northbound vehicles were not able to avoid the debris and crashed into them.
Officials expect that Gorsi and the other people involved in the crash will survive. In addition, they do not believe that alcohol or drugs were contributing factors. As a result, no arrests were made. However, additional charges may be filed against Gorsi for texting while driving.
In the meantime, the incident prompted the closure of both the northbound and southbound lanes of Highway 99. However, all lanes reopened after crews cleared the wreckage.
