Terry Cook of Oregon Injured in Head-On Crash on State Route 97 [Toppenish, WA]

Driver to Face Charges Following SR 97 Collision

Toppenish, WA (August 4, 2024) – 43-year-old Terry Cook of Oregon was injured in a head-on crash on State Route 97 Friday.

The two-vehicle crash happened near mile post 46, about 14 miles south of Toppenish

WSP officers said a southbound vehicle driven by 43-year-old Alma Torres also of Oregon, was attempting to pass another vehicle. It crossed into the northbound lane where it collided head-on with a northbound vehicle.

Alma Torres and her passenger, Terry Cook, were both taken to Yakima Memorial Hospital. Officers said Cook was not wearing a seatbelt during the accident.

The man driving the northbound vehicle, Oleksand Tsaryk, 23, also from Oregon, was not seriously hurt.

Officers stated that Torres will be charged with negligent driving.

Distracted driving can be defined as anything that takes your attention away from driving, including talking or texting on your phone, eating, drinking, talking to people in your vehicle, fiddling with the stereo, entertainment system, or navigation system – any activity that distracts you from driving safely.

There is no doubt that texting is one of the most alarming distractions. Sending or reading a text takes your eyes off the road for 5 seconds.

You cannot drive safely unless you use your full attention. Any non-driving activity you do is a potential distraction and increases your risk of crashing.
