16-Year-Old Santa Maria Girl Fatally Injured in Solo-Car Accident near Tepusquet Road
SANTA MARIA, CA (August 2, 2018) – A girl was killed Thursday evening and her sister was hospitalized, following a solo-vehicle crash near Tepusquet Road. Her identity and place of residence were not immediately disclosed.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the incident happened shortly before 7:00 PM near Tepusquet Road. 20-year-old Jane DeJesus was driving a 2019 Kia Sportage on Autumn Road when it lost control and rolled over.
The impact ejected the driver’s sole passenger, her 16-year-old sister, from the passenger seat. Meanwhile, DeJesus managed to stay inside the vehicle. Authorities confirmed that the sisters were not secured in seat belts at the time of the accident.
Their stepfather, Antonio Perez-Cortes, flagged down an ambulance near the intersection of Betteravia Road and Telephone Road. He was on his way to a hospital with his injured stepchildren inside his vehicle. It is unknown how Perez-Cortes came upon the scene.
The ambulance rushed both victims to the Marian Regional Medical Center. DeJesus sustained major injuries and is currently in critical condition. Unfortunately, the 16-year-old girl succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead by medical staff.
Alcohol and drugs were ruled out as possible contributing factors in the fatal crash, which remains under investigation. No further details have been released to the public at this time.
