28-Year-Old Oakland Cyclist Fatally Struck by Vehicle near Elverton Drive
OAKLAND, CA (May 31, 2018) – A bicyclist was killed late Thursday afternoon after her bicycle was struck by an SUV in the Oakland Hills. The coroner’s office identified her as 28-year-old Tatyana Schmid, a resident of Oakland.
According to the police, the fatal collision took place at 4:30 PM in the 7000 block of Skyline Boulevard near Elverton Drive. Schmid was heading east on her bicycle and entering a bend in the road. At the same time, a westbound Chevrolet Traverse was also entering the curved road.
Schmid swerved into oncoming traffic and collided head-on with the Chevrolet. She sustained critical injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The unidentified SUV driver was reportedly unharmed and stayed at the scene to cooperate with the authorities.
Investigators ruled out drugs and alcohol as contributing factors in the crash and are considering speed as the possible cause. No other information is available at the moment as an investigation is ongoing. Witnesses or anyone with relevant information is encouraged to contact the authorities by calling (510) 777-8570.
