Crossing Guard Susan Burk Struck and Killed by Car in Simi Valley
SIMI VALLEY, CA (December 22, 2018) – A 62-year-old crossing guard was struck and killed by a vehicle in Simi Valley on Tuesday afternoon.
According to the Simi Valley Police Department, 62-year-old Susan Mary Burk of Simi Valley died after she was struck by a vehicle at about 2 p.m. Tuesday near East Los Angeles Avenue and Socrates Avenue.
Burk was working as a crossing guard for the students of the nearby Arroyo School, but the students had not yet been dismissed when the incident occurred. She was standing on a curb at the northwest corner along East Los Angeles Avenue when she was hit by a blue Chevrolet Cruze that was involved in a collision with two other vehicles. Burk was taken by ambulance to a hospital but she was pronounced dead on arrival.
All parties involved in the collision were cooperating with the ongoing investigation, officials said.
Records show that Burk was not the first crossing guard who was hit by a vehicle in Simi Valley in 2018. In October, 57-year-old Robert Belanger was seriously injured when he reportedly pushed a pedestrian out of the way of a vehicle that did not stop at a stop sign. Belanger was hospitalized after the crash and his condition eventually stabilized.
Our deepest thoughts and regrets are with the family and friends of Susan Mary Burk.
