Toddler in Critical Condition, Pregnant Woman and Two Others Dead in Accident near Road 216
STRATHMORE, CA (April 29, 2018) – On Sunday afternoon around 3:00 PM, a fatal head-on collision took place on Avenue 196 near Road 216.
According to reports, a suspected DUI driver was traveling east on Avenue 196 in a 1996 Lincoln, when he tried to pass another car. He crossed the solid double yellow line, driving into oncoming traffic, into the path of a Toyota Corolla containing a family of three.
In attempts to avoid crashing into the Lincoln, the 21-year-old Exeter man driving the Toyota swerved. But, so did the other driver, resulting in a head-on crash. The Corolla overturned several times from the impact of the accident. A one-year-old boy inside of the car was critically injured and transported to the Kaweah Delta Medical Center, while his mother and father were fatally injured. The 22-year-old woman from Exeter was six to seven months pregnant.
The 24-year-old DUI driver from Strathmore was also fatally injured in the accident. He had been drinking prior to the collision and there was an open alcohol container in his vehicle, according to California Highway Patrol Officer Marc McWilliams.
Officials continue to investigate the tragic accident. No other information has been released to the public at this time.
