24-Year-Old Hospitalized after Accident near French Road in Bellingham
BELLINGHAM, WA (February 28, 2020) – Wednesday afternoon, a male Bellingham resident identified as Steven Poolman was injured in a car accident on Cultus Bay Road.
According to reports, 24-year-old Poolman was driving a gray 2002 Volkswagen Passat at high rates of speed on Cultus Bay road. His vehicle then veered off the right side of the roadway and struck multiple trees just south of French Road around 3:57 p.m.
“It occurred on a straight stretch of the road, so going off the road is not typical,” Trooper Heather Axtman stated.
Medics flew Poolman to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, in critical condition. A 4-year-old occupant inside the car escaped serious injury and did not require an ambulance.
Authorities later revealed that speed was the main cause of the collision. They also said that the young child and Poolman were both using a seat belt at the time.
Medics also stated that Poolman is still in critical condition and is currently held in the intensive care unit.
The surrounding area was closed off during preliminary investigations. However, no further information has been released to the public at this time.
