Steven Leon Arrested after North Fork DUI Accident on Road 274

 
NORTH FORK, CA (March 5, 2019) – A driver is under arrest on suspicion of DUI after he crashed his pickup and left the scene on Friday, March 1.
 
Shortly before 4:30 p.m., 29-year-old Steven Leon, of North Fork, was driving southbound in a 2003 Chevy Silverado on Road 274 along the north shore of Bass Lake.
 
A witness who was right behind the Chevy said that Leon had been tailgating a brown pickup all the way from The Pines Resort turnoff.
 
After three vehicles passed by the Central Camp Road at about 50 mph, the witness stated that Leon pulled out across the double yellow lines on a blind curve and he passed the brown truck.
 
When the witness rounded the corner, she noticed dust flying everywhere. Leon had collided off the east side of the road and then smashed through trees and huge boulders. After that, his vehicle came to rest upside down against a large tree approximately 60 feet down the steep embankment. The truck’s tonneau cover stayed up on the roadway, leaning against a tree.
 
The driver of the brown truck stopped and helped Leon get out of the wrecked truck. The witness said that when Leon noticed that she was calling 911, he ran away toward North Fork.
 
A Sierra National Forest law enforcement officer then saw Leon and detained him.
 
Sierra Ambulance brought Leon to a Valley hospital where he will likely need some stitches to his lip before authorities arrested him for DUI.
 
Officers shut down Road 274 for around 15 minutes as they hauled the Chevy back up onto the roadway.
