56-Year-Old Modesto Man Fatally Struck by Hit-and-Run Driver on 780 Freeway in Benicia
BENICIA, CA (October 21, 2019) – A man was struck and killed by a suspected hit-and-run driver Monday evening in Benicia, CHP officials said.
The fatal crash happened around just before 8:00 p.m. along the westbound lanes of 780 Freeway, just east of State Park Drive overcrossing.
According to the CHP, the man was walking near the freeway when a vehicle traveling at an unknown speed struck him. The driver failed to stop and continued traveling westbound on 780 Freeway.
The pedestrian suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene. The Solano County Sheriff-Coroner’s Office identified the victim as Steve Layman, 56, of Modesto.
Physical evidence found at the scene pointed to a 2013-2018 silver Honda Accord with moderate right-side damage as the possible suspect vehicle, authorities said.
The westbound lanes of 780 Freeway were closed for about an hour while police investigated the incident.
No words can mend the broken hearts and sorrow felt during this delicate moment. Our deepest condolences and sympathies are with the family and friends of Steve Layman.
