Stephen Covarrubias and Victor Vargas Killed in Crash on Howard Road [Westley, CA]

Two People Fatally Injured in Head-On Collision near Stark Road

 
WESTLEY, CA (October 5, 2018) – Two men were killed in a car accident on Howard Road, early Friday evening. The deceased victims were identified as 38-year-old Stephen Covarrubias of Ceres and his passenger, 29-year-old Victor Vargas of Patterson.
 
According to the California Highway Patrol, the collision took place at approximately 5:15 PM near Stark Road.
 
Covarrubias, Victor Vargas, and 24-year-old Jesus Vargas of Atwater were riding in a Toyota Corolla on eastbound Howard near the Delta-Mendota Canal. At the same time, 20-year-old Alejandra Villanueva of Patterson was driving her Chevrolet Trailblazer when she allowed the vehicle to drift to the north dirt shoulder. She over-corrected back onto the road and into the path of the Toyota, crashing head-on. Both vehicles were traveling around 60 mph at the time of the collision.
 
Upon arrival, officers pronounced Covarrubias and Vargas dead on the scene. Villanueva and her passenger, 21-year old Armando Garcia of Patterson, suffered major injuries. Both were transported to the Memorial Medical Center in Modesto, but there is no update on their current medical conditions. It is unclear if Jesus was injured in the incident.

As per reports, all of the occupants in both vehicles were wearing seatbelts at the time of the accident. Alcohol and drugs did not appear to be contributing factors in the collision. Additional information will be released to the public, following the conclusion of the investigation.
