Injuries Reported in Mendocino County Plane Accident near Whale Gulch
MENDOCINO COUNTY, CA (March 10, 2024) – Friday afternoon, a startling plane crash near Whale Gulch left passengers with minor injuries.
The incident happened at around 1:30 p.m. when a Cirrus SR22, a small plane manufactured in 2004, encountered mechanical issues shortly after takeoff, resulting in a crash in a wooded area near Whale Gulch in northern Mendocino County.
Despite the circumstances, all occupants, including a young child, emerged with only minor injuries, thanks in part to the presence of a parachute system approved by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
Resident Amber Rashall recounted the events, noting that she heard a loud noise resembling a boom around the time of the incident. Rashall, who was inside her residence at the time, rushed to investigate and observed the plane deploying a parachute, slowing its descent. However, upon returning with a phone to call for help, she discovered that the aircraft had disappeared, leading her to believe it had crashed.
Following Rashall’s report, emergency responders located the crash site, finding the aircraft entangled in trees with its occupants still inside. Despite the plane landing upside down in the brush, the passengers managed to escape with minor injuries. Rashall and other residents assisted, helping the passengers retrieve their belongings as the aircraft began to emit smoke, although it did not catch fire.
Emergency services from Whale Gulch Volunteer Fire Department and Shelter Cove Fire Department swiftly arrived at the scene, with additional support from Humboldt County Sheriff’s deputies due to the remote location. The Mendocino County Sheriff’s deputies were required to navigate through Humboldt County to reach the site, as direct access was not possible from their jurisdiction.
The exact cause of the accident remains under investigation, with the pilot mentioning efforts to avoid crashing into the ocean. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the FAA are expected to conduct inquiries into the incident, given the unique safety features of the aircraft, including its parachute system.
The passengers, reportedly from Santa Rosa, had spent the night in Shelter Cove before departing towards Whale Gulch, where the crash occurred. As investigations progress, authorities aim to uncover the circumstances surrounding the incident and implement measures to prevent similar accidents in the future.
