Several Hurt in Glendale Auto Accident near 51st Avenue and Butler Drive
GLENDALE, AZ (October 4, 2024) – Thursday morning, a startling pickup truck crash near 51st Avenue and Butler Drive led to injuries.
The incident occurred at about 8:00 am, near 51st Avenue and Butler Drive, north of Northern Avenue.
Glendale Police Sgt. Moroni Mendez reported that a pickup truck driver, who had three children in the vehicle, was heading northbound when another truck attempted a left turn onto Butler Drive. The two cars collided, causing the pickup to lose control. The truck veered over a curb, onto the sidewalk, over utility pedestals, and finally crashed into the corner of the American Child Care Center.
Initially, authorities believed the second driver, a 79-year-old man, had fled the scene. However, it was later confirmed that he remained at the location for several minutes before leaving and was later contacted by Glendale police. He was not injured in the crash.
Inside the daycare were 15 children and five adults, none were injured. The building was evacuated as a precaution. The 32-year-old pickup driver and the three children, ages 5, 8, and 10, were hospitalized with minor injuries.
Glendale firefighters safely removed the truck from the building, and a building inspector determined there was no serious structural damage. The affected area will be fenced off and boarded up for safety. The truck sustained significant front-end damage.
All of the children were picked up by their parents. Investigators are still determining whether speed played a role in the crash. Although no criminal charges are currently being pursued, civil traffic violations may be issued once the investigation is complete.
