PHOENIX, AZ (June 10, 2023) – Wednesday night, a police cruiser was involved in a startling pedestrian crash near 11th Avenue and Yuma Road.

The incident happened just before 6:00 p.m. near 11th Avenue and Yuma Road, said Sgt. Brian Bower with Phoenix Police.

According to reports, a patrol officer and assistant just finished a call as they turned near 11th Avenue ad Yuma Road. Then, they noticed a young girl waving at them from the front yard of a house, trying to get their attention.

However, as they waved back, they saw another child on the road. The officer attempted to stop but they hit the child.

Then, responders took the child to a hospital in critical condition.

“We are all heartbroken that such a young child was involved in an accident that has caused serious injuries. Our prayers go out to the family. We’re all hoping for a speedy recovery, not just the Phoenix Police Department but the community,” Bower stated. “Everybody’s affected, both officers and family with such a horrific situation that we encountered today.”

“The little girl was trying to get her cousin before the baby went into the street,” witness Venus Garcia revealed. “When we were leaving, the cop carried the baby from underneath the car to the next house over,” Gracia added.

Officers confirmed that the incident injured a 2-year-old boy. Meanwhile, the incident led to the closure of 11th Avenue between Pima and Yuma streets.

At this time, the circumstances that led to the crash remained unclear. Once additional details become available, the public will be notified.
