Woman Struck and Killed by Car after Car Crash on 5 Freeway at Lomas Santa Fe Drive
SOLANA BEACH, CA (February 23, 2018) – A woman was killed after being involved in a two-car collision on 5 Freeway in Solana Beach on Friday morning.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the driver of a Hyundai Elantra was speeding when her car rear-ended a Lincoln LS at Lomas Santa Fe Drive on northbound 5 Freeway just before 4:30 AM. The impact caused the Lincoln to skid onto the eastern edge of the roadway, where it struck a signal that controls traffic entering the freeway from Lomas Santa Fe.
The unidentified Hyundai driver, believed to be in her 30’s or 40’s, jumped out of her car and climbed over a center-divider wall into the southbound lanes of traffic. She was then struck by an oncoming Ford Fiesta, killing her on the scene.
Authorities stated that it was unclear why the woman attempted to cross the freeway on foot. No other deaths or injuries were caused by the accident.
Only two lanes of southbound 5 Freeway were open as of 5:15 AM after the crash, and were reopened by 7 AM.
