2 Stockdale High Students Killed and 2 Others Injured in Jeep Accident near Grapevine Road
LEBEC, CA (June 3, 2018) – Two Bakersfield teens were killed after their Jeep crashed on the 5 Freeway, early Sunday evening. The deceased victims were identified as 15-year-old Sidney Chang and 18-year-old Amal Shurbaji.
California Highway Patrol officers stated that the crash occurred just before 5:30 PM on a northbound lane of Interstate 5, just south of Grapevine Road. A vehicle changed lanes in front of the 2005 Jeep Wrangler, carrying 4 teens, cutting them off.
The 17-year-old driver of the Jeep swerved, lost control of the vehicle, and struck the center median. The impact of the collision causing the car to roll an unknown amount of times.
The driver and three passengers were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment and evaluation. Chang and Shurbaji later succumbed to their injuries and were pronounced dead. The unidentified driver suffered minor injuries and the third passenger suffered major injuries.
All lanes of 5 Freeway were closed for some time after the tragic accident. It continues to be under investigation, but CHP stated that alcohol and drugs do not appear to be contributing factors. Officers are urging witnesses to contact them by calling (661) 248-6655.
