Northern California Sheriff’s Deputy Dies after Crashing into Power Pole in Riverbank
RIVERBANK, CA (November 25, 2018) – Sheriff’s Deputy Antonio “Tony” Hinostroza, 45, was killed after his patrol car hit a power pole Sunday evening in Riverbank.
Hinostroza, who was assigned to the department’s main office, was responding to help deputies in Riverbank who were involved in a chase.
The pursuit began at 9:48 p.m. when deputies received a report of a driver passed out behind the wheel of a car at Oakdale Road and Patterson Road.
When deputies arrived, the driver of the car, a silver Cadillac Escalade, drove away, leading deputies on a pursuit. Deputies put out a spike strip which disabled the Escalade at the intersection of Fine Avenue and Cambridge Court.
The driver got out of the Cadillac and fought with deputies, who used a less-lethal bean bag to help take him into custody, the release said.
At the same time, dispatchers started getting calls regarding a sheriff’s patrol vehicle that had crashed into a power pole at Terminal Avenue and Claribel Road. The sheriff’s department, along with the California Highway Patrol, paramedics and firefighters, responded to the crash in an attempt to rescue Hinostroza, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
Hinostroza had been with the Sheriff’s Department for nearly two decades. He served as a patrol deputy, K9 handler, gang detective, SWAT team member and field training officer.
The Escalade driver, Jonathan Carrillo-Gonzalez, 30, of Modesto, was arrested on charges of driving under the influence, felony evasion, and resisting arrest.
Camilo-Gonzalez’ license was suspended in June 2018 for driving under the influence, and he had at least three prior convictions for DUI in the past nine years, according to the sheriff’s department.
Both roads are closed in the area for the on-scene investigation.
During this time of tragedy, we would like to extend our deepest condolences and sympathies to the family and friends of Antonio Hinostroza. We hope they find strength and comfort as they grieve over their loss.
