Shannon Schmidt, Son Injured in San Luis Obispo Car Accident
SAN LUIS OBISPO, CA (February 20, 2019) – A woman and her son were injured following a rear-end crash Wednesday afternoon on the Cuesta Grade.
The crash happened around 3:00 p.m. in the far right lane of southbound Highway 101. According to the California Highway Patrol, a 2005 GMC Yukon was heading southbound on the highway near TV Tower Road.
The vehicle moved to the third lane to pass a slower vehicle. As a result, it slammed into the back of the big rig that was traveling southbound at 35 miles per hour.
The impact of the crash caused the SUV to become wedged under the big rig, the CHP said.
The driver of the SUV, a 44-year-old Shannon Schmidt of Atascadero, suffered serious head injuries. She had to be extricated from the vehicle due to injuries.
Her 9-year-old son, who was at the front right passenger seat, was able to get out of the SUV. He suffered moderate injuries in the accident.
Both were taken to Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center in San Luis Obispo. The driver of the big rig, a 23-year-old Eriberto Ramirez Barba of Santa Maria, was unharmed.
The crash blocked traffic on the Cuesta Grade, and both the second and third lanes were closed for about two hours.
Investigation of the incident is still ongoing.
