Late Afternoon Crash Involving 3 Cars on Grass Valley Highway Kills 1 and Badly Injures Another
AUBURN, CA (December 6, 2019) – A woman was seriously injured following a fatal three-vehicle crash late Friday afternoon in Auburn, according to the CHP.
The crash happened around 5:07 p.m. on Grass Valley Highway, also known as Highway 49, at Joeger Road.
Witnesses told officers that a 1996 Lexus ES300, driven by a 55-year-old woman, was heading south on the highway at a high rate speed. The right rear tire of the car worn down to the rim, causing sparks to shoot into the air.
The Lexus was approaching Joeger Road when it suddenly swerved into the northbound lanes, where it collided head-on with a 2012 Hyundai Sonata. The impact caused the Hyundai to flip onto its side. The Lexus spun out and crashed into a 2017 Toyota 4Runner.
The driver of the Lexus was ejected and died at the scene. Her identity was not immediately available.
The driver of the Hyundai, 39-year-old Shannon Jordan of Grass Valley, suffered major injuries. Paramedics rushed her to Sutter Roseville Medical Center in an unknown condition.
The driver of the Toyota, 31-year-old Michelle Thompkins, was unharmed.
CHP officials are still investigating the full circumstances of the crash.
