1 Killed and 2 Hospitalized after Head-On Collision near Main Street Exit

RIVERSIDE, CA (July 15, 2018) – A man was killed early Sunday morning and two others were injured following a wrong-way crash on 60 Freeway. The Riverside County Coroner’s Office later identified the victim as 23-year-old Shanilka Mapatuna, a resident of Moreno Valley.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the incident took place at about 3:30 AM near the Main Street exit.

A 2002 Ford Mustang, driven by a 19-year-old Ontario woman, was heading west in the eastbound lanes at a high rate of speed when it collided head-on with a black Dodge Caravan driven by 23-year-old Alazar Omari of Fontana.

The impact of the crash forced the Dodge into the center median and ultimately struck the center divider wall. Mapatuna, who was seated in the front, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Omari and the wrong-way driver were transported to Riverside Community Hospital after suffering major injuries.

A GoFundMe page was created by Omari to assist Mapatuna’s family with ongoing expenses. Click on the link to donate and to support the campaign.

Authorities continue to investigate the deadly accident. Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to call the Riverside California Highway Patrol Accident Investigation Unit at (951) 637-8000. No additional information has been disclosed to the public at this time.

We extend our sincerest sympathies to the family and friends of Shanilka Mapatuna, also known as Jehan. He will be remembered as a strong, loving, and smart young man by everyone who knew him. May he rest in peace.
