Phoenix, AZ (March 20, 2024) – On Thursday night, 24-year-old Sergio Vasquez Jr died in a 2-vehicle crash on 83rd Avenue.

Police received reports of the crash around 10:45 p.m. near 83rd Avenue and Thomas Road. Upon arrival, crews discovered two vehicles involved: a Chevy Spark and a Lexus sedan, with the Lexus being split in two. 

Police indicated that the Lexus driver, speeding, collided with the Spark moving north on 83rd Avenue. Sergio Vasquez Jr., a 24-year-old passenger in the Lexus, died at the scene.

Authorities transported the suspected speeding driver to the hospital in critical condition. The Spark’s driver sustained no injuries, police reported.

The collision also impacted a power box and a light pole at the intersection, leading to a minor power outage in the area, according to police statements.

At this point, it remains uncertain whether impairment played a role in the crash.

No arrests have occurred yet as an investigation continues.
