Pickup Truck Driver Sergio Martinez Dies in Castaic Accident
CASTAIC, CA (August 14, 2019) – A pickup truck driver died in a fiery big rig crash on 5 Freeway on Wednesday morning.
The coroner has identified the victim as 35-year-old Sergio Martinez, of Grand Junction, Colorado.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the incident happened at about 5:30 AM. Due to unknown reasons, a pickup truck crashed into the rear of a tractor-trailer near Hasley Canyon Road.
With Martinez still inside, the pickup truck erupted in flames. Fire crews with the Los Angeles County Fire Department extinguished the fire in about 10 minutes. Unfortunately, Martinez died after sustaining fatal injuries in the crash.
Meanwhile, the big rig driver did not sustain injuries in the collision. Also, the surviving driver remained and cooperated with investigators.
The CHP continues to investigate the cause of the fatal collision. They encourage witnesses to cooperate as soon as possible. Authorities will release additional information following the conclusion of the investigation.
