Multi-Vehicle Accident Involving Speeding Semi-Truck in Tacoma
TACOMA, WA (January 23, 2019) – A total of four vehicles were involved in a semi-truck accident on the 5 Freeway Wednesday morning.
Officials reported the crash happened just after 3:30 PM on the 5 Freeway near Highway 16.
Washington State Patrol stated the semi-truck was driving too fast for rainy conditions when it crashed into the concrete jersey barriers that separate the northbound and southbound lanes. The impact caused the barriers to be pushed into oncoming traffic, causing a car to land on top of it which lead to a domino effect.
The WSDOT reported more than a dozen barriers between the two sides of the highway were seriously damaged. Crews had to clean up the fuel spill. Another big rig had crashed in the same area a couple days ago.
Due to the collision, lanes were blocked for a period of time. The semi driver was cited for speeding.
No more details surrounding the accident have been released.
It is important that you drive cautiously and responsibly in rainy conditions. Slowing down and abiding by the speed limit can prevent your vehicle form hydroplaning in heavy rains.
