8-Year-Old Boy Killed in Late Evening DUI Crash on East Rose Avenue
SELMA, CA (February 23, 2019) – Saturday evening, an 8-year-old boy was killed in a fatal DUI accident on South Bethel Avenue.
The deadly collision happened around 10:05 p.m., at the intersection of South Bethel and East Rose Avenue. First responders arrived to the scene after receiving multiple dispatch calls about a serious accident in the area.
Reports indicate that an 8-year-old boy and his parents, 29-year-old Meghan Martzen, and driver, 33-year-old Scott Martzen, were traveling eastbound in a Kia Optima. However, Rose Avenue is not controlled by a stop sign.
A 35-year-old Karmjit Singh of Visalia then ran the flashing stop signs on Bethel Avenue at speeds near 100 mph. The front of Singh’s BMW hit the passenger side of the Optima and landed on its wheels in a dry irrigation canal. The Optima consequently hit a tree due to the impact.
The young boy in the right rear seat was found suffering from life-threatening injuries. Firefighters and paramedics rushed him to Selma Hospital where staff was able to find a pulse. He was then airlifted to Valley Children’s Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. His parents were taken to Selma Hospital with broken bones. Their current status is unknown at this time.
Singh was taken to Community Regional Medical Center, where he claimed he could not provide a breath sample. He was consequently arrested and a blood sample was taken. He was later released from the hospital and booked into Fresno County Jail.
Singh was driving on a suspended license after a DUI conviction in 2016, according to the CHP.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement has also placed an an immigration hold on Singh, according to Fresno County Sheriff’s Office.
Investigation of this fatal crash is still ongoing.
