1 Killed and 2 Injured in Head-On Collision in Santa Barbara
SANTA BARBARA, CA (February 21, 2020) – Early Friday evening, 24-year-old Selena Araiza was killed in a car accident Highway 1.
CHP received reports of the head-on crash around 6:20 p.m. The vehicles involved were later described as a 2005 Honda S2000 and a 2015 Nissan Sentra
According to reports, 55-year-old Michael Hanson of Lompoc, was driving north in his Honda near Santa Rosa Road.
Hanson veered off and back on the road before striking a southbound Nissan. The Nissan was driven by 27-year-old Joseph Hernandez, of Santa Barbara.
Three AMR ambulances, a Calstar helicopter, and a county helicopter took them to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital for further treatment.
Medics later said Hernandez suffered fractures of his elbow, wrist, pelvic bone, tibia, fibula, and femur.
Moreover, Hanson’s passenger, Araiza, suffered life-threatening injuries before she was later pronounced dead on scene.
Authorities are still investigating the events leading up at this time. However, it has not yet been determined whether intoxication was a factor.
Additionally, a GoFundMe page was created to help Hernandez while he recovers.
The surrounding area was closed off for a brief time during preliminary duties. However, the roadway has since reopened.
No further information has been released at this time.
