Joaquin Compean-Juarez Arrested After Fatal Crash in Northeast Harris County
Harris County, TX (September 18, 2024) 21-year-old Sebastian Benitez-Mendoza died in a crash on Monday night in northeast Harris County.
The Harris County Sheriff’s Office arrested the driver responsible. The accident occurred near the intersection of Sheldon Road and Crosby Freeway.
49-year-old Joaquin Compean-Juarez, was driving his Ford F-150 westbound on Crosby Freeway when he lost control of his truck. He veered off the road, crossed a grassy embankment, and collided with a Ford Fiesta on the northbound lanes of Sheldon Road.
Benitez-Mendoza, who was driving the Fiesta, was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from his vehicle upon impact. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Investigators noted that Compean-Juarez showed signs of intoxication at the scene and was arrested. He has been charged with felony murder. Sheriff Ed Gonzalez confirmed that this was not Compean-Juarez’s first offense, as he had two prior convictions for driving while intoxicated. The investigation is ongoing.
