Deadly Oakland Wrong-Way Crash on 80 Freeway and San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge
OAKLAND, CA (September 6, 2021) – Early Monday, a wrong-way DUI accident on I-80 and San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge left Sean O’Brien, 60, dead.
Reports confirmed that the authorities received reports of the crash at 1:12 a.m. Moreover, at least one of the vehicles caught fire and people started escaping on foot.
The crash involved a wrong-way driver, Erik Steverson, 32, and multiple vehicles. According to reports, the incident led to the closure of the eastbound lanes of Interstate Highway 80. Moreover, the closure occurred just east of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge.
Shortly after, authorities arrested Mr. Steverson for vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence, hit-and-run causing death or injury and driving under the influence (DUI).
Later police reports revealed that Sean O’Brien, an Emeryville resident, perished in the wrong- way crash.
By 1:35 a.m., the CHP issued an alert that all eastbound lanes. The alert transpired near the interchange with the eastbound 580 Freeway were blocked.
