SANTA CRUZ, CA – Fatal Motorcycle Collision on Empire Grade Road

Motorcyclist Fatally Injured in Head-On Collision with SUV near Smith Grade Road

SANTA CRUZ, CA (April 21, 2018) – On Saturday afternoon, a motorcycle and SUvV crashed on Empire Grade Road, resulting in one dead.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the collision occurred around 2:00 PM on Empire Grade Road, just north of Smith Grade Road, near Felton. The rider of the motorcyclist suddenly crossed double-yellow lines into the northbound traffic and slammed against a Dodge Durango SUV. The driver of the Durango tried to avoid the rider, but there was not enough space for movement as there was a rock wall beside the road.

The motorcyclist was a member of a group of six other riders, who returned to the scene of the collision. They attempted CPR before CHP Officials arrived and attempted resuscitation and life-saving attempts; however, the driver succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced at the scene.

Investigators are trying to figure out what caused the fatal motorcycle collision. It is still unknown why the rider decided to be left behind and suddenly crossed over to the northbound lanes. They first looked at speeding as a possible factor in the crash, as it was a very common event in the area; however, there was no proof that it might have been the cause.

Both the Durango driver and the rider’s identities are undisclosed as the authorities continue to investigate the case. Empire Grade Road was shut down for cleaning and gathering of evidence until 6:00 PM. No other information is available at this time.
