Male Pedestrian Fatally Struck by Vehicle While Running Across 5 Freeway in San Juan Capistrano
SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO, CA (March 22, 2019) – A man was struck and killed by a vehicle Friday evening in San Juan Capistrano, authorities said.
The fatal incident happened around 8:45 p.m. along the northbound lanes of 5 Freeway at Junipero Serra Road.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the man was running across the freeway and stood between the carpool lane and the far left lane of traffic, when he was struck by a 2003 Kia that was traveling northbound.
Responding officers found the man lying unresponsive on the left shoulder. The victim, who was only identified as a 21-year-old San Juan Capistrano resident, was pronounced dead at the scene. His name has not yet been released pending notification of his family members.
The driver of the Kia, a 25-year-old Los Angeles man, tried to avoid the pedestrian, but could not because there was another vehicle to his right, the CHP said. He was uninjured, remained on scene and cooperated with investigators.
It was not immediately known if drugs or alcohol were a factor in the crash. Further investigation is underway.
