Bicyclist Struck and Killed While Walking His Bike on the 8800 Block of Friars Road
SAN DIEGO, CA (January 23, 2018) – On Tuesday evening around 6:15 PM, a homeless man was hit and killed by a car while crossing Friars Road near Qualcomm Way.
Wearing all dark clothes, the man was walking his bicycle eastbound and crossed Friars Rd outside of the crosswalk. A 51-year-old man driving a green 2000 Subaru sedan, didn’t see the bicyclist on the road and struck him. The driver remained on the scene and called police.
The homeless man sustained critical injuries and was taken to a local hospital, where he was later declared dead.
A Sigalert was issued and all lanes in both directions were blocked and traffic was diverted, as the San Diego Police Department conducted an investigation and officials cleared the road of debris from the fatal crash.
Neither drugs or alcohol are believed to be involved, according to SD Police Sgt. Michael Tansey.
Heartfelt condolences to the friends and family of the deceased man.
