Bicyclist Fatally Struck by Car on Fairmount Avenue in San Diego
SAN DIEGO, CA (February 12, 2019) – A man was killed following a bicycle crash Tuesday evening in San Diego, authorities said.
The fatal crash happened just before 7:00 p.m. on Fairmount Avenue near 47th Street, just South of Home Street and North of Federal Boulevard.
According to police, a 66-year-old Chollas Creek man was riding southbound in the northbound lanes when he lost control of his bike and fell into the roadway, where he was ran over by a northbound Toyota Camry.
The cyclist suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. His name has not yet been released pending next of kin notification.
The driver of the Camry, a 61-year-old woman, told police she saw what she first thought was a shadow but could not swerve out of the way in time when she realized it was a body.
Authorities are trying to figure out if the victim was under the influence or suffered some kind of health condition. They are reviewing surveillance footage from cameras on an MTS bus that was behind the Camry at the time of the crash.
