Samara Johnson of Comanche Killed in Head-On Collision on FM 2247 [Comanche County, TX]

Comanche County, TX (July 23, 2023) – On Tuesday night, Samara Johnson, 21, of Comanche, was killed, while Waggoner Wayne  Shelton, 18, also of Comanche, was injured in a head-on collision on FM 2247.

The Texas Department of Public Safety stated that the collision unfolded at 8:17 p.m. approximately 6.2 miles north of Comanche. 

A preliminary crash investigation determined that the pickup truck driven by Waggoner Wayne  Shelton was traveling southbound in the northbound lane while driving on a curve. 

At the same time, the SUV, driven by Samara Johnson was traveling northbound approaching the pickup truck on the same curve. 

Shelton steered to the southbound lane to the right while Johnson steered to the southbound lane to try to avoid the pickup truck. Unfortunately, the two vehicles collided head-on.

Responding officers declared Johnson deceased at the scene.

Shelton and a 14-year-old passenger were both transported to Hendrick North Hospital for treatment of injuries. DPS said neither was wearing seatbelts when the collision happened.
