Drivers Injured in Fatal Ward County Collision

Ward County, TX (March 5, 2024) – Samantha Bursum, a 14-year-old Las Cruces Public Schools student, was killed following an Interstate 20 collision Friday night.

It was about 9:32 p.m. on March 1 when the fatal collision happened on the eastbound freeway at Mile Most 73.

Investigating officers said 25-year-old Isaac Mendoza of Pecos was driving a 2008 Cadillac CTS with no lights. The vehicle was disabled and blocked both lanes of eastbound Interstate 10 as a result of a previous collision.

At the same time, 50-year-old Loreta Keleher Willis, from Las Cruces, New Mexico, was driving a 2016 Toyota SUV. She did not see Mendoza’s vehicle and collided with it.

The passenger of Willis, Samantha Bursum, was taken to Ward Memorial Hospital where she later died.

Moreover, the rescuers rushed Mendoza and Willis to Ward Memorial Hospital with serious injuries.

Officers are investigating this fatal accident.
